Skincare for men: why your skin is different

When it comes to skincare for men, most guys tend to keep it simple. So simple in fact, that they might think that a bar of soap in the shower is all they need to care for their face. More and more men are pursuing younger-looking skin, and we have an effective skincare plan to help you understand why it’s just as important for you to take care of your handsome face as it is for women to take care of their skin.

How skincare for men differs from a woman’s routine

According to the National Library of Medicine, studies show that skin parameters of hydration, water loss, sebum, circulation, pigmentation, and thickness are generally higher in men while skin pH is higher in women. The hormone testosterone determines the masculine characteristics of male skin and gives it a different structure than that of women. Men have skin that allows aging differently than women’s skin. For instance, men typically have 25% thicker skin due to higher collagen content and their oil glands are more active, allowing for innate moisturization over their adult years. This makes the aging process more gradual from young men to older ages, while women’s skin maintains thickness and moisture content consistently until menopause when estrogen levels go down.

Women also focus more on moisturization to compensate for lower sebum production. Sebum is an oily, waxy substance produced by your body’s sebaceous glands, which coats and protects your skin. Men have pores that are larger and more prominent than women and their sebum production is almost double that of women.

Signs of aging appear later for men but, once they begin, they occur more quickly than for women. Because men have more testosterone and therefore facial hair, shaving removes the upper skin barrier and can leave skin unprotected. Men benefit more from all-natural retinol like sea fennel because they experience a gradual decline in collagen levels starting at a young age. Men tend to be more prone to deep wrinkles due to repeated facial expressions. Pigmentation is darker on men than women because females tend to require high amounts of calcium for pregnancy or lactation. Women tend to have more vitamin D and calcium for pregnancy and therefore have lighter pigmentation.

Understanding your skin and shaving effects

First, it’s important that you identify and understand your skin type. Sensitive skin may sting or burn after using products. Normal skin is often clear and not sensitive. Dry skin is itchy, rough, and flaky. Oily skin tends to be greasy and shiny. And combination skin tends to be dry in some areas while oily in others. Once you know your skin type you can begin taking better care of your skin with the right routine.

The importance of using high-quality skincare products

Washing your face daily and after you exercise is important for keeping skin healthy. Regular bar soap often contains harsher ingredients that can dry out your skin. Make sure to use a gentle cleanser like RENUAdvanced® Foaming Cleanser, which gently removes excess oil and dirt without stripping your face’s natural oils.

Following your facial cleanse, you’ll want to use a toner that uses healthy probiotics to help maintain your natural skin microbiome and lessen redness and sensitivity. RENUAdvanced® Balancing Toner helps improve the appearance of healthy-looking skin by supporting good bacteria.

You’ll want to add a serum to prevent damage and repair skin cells. A serum helps support skin-protective barriers from daily environmental assault and helps skin cells renew quickly so you can build up a natural skin barrier. RENUAdvanced® Glow Serum uses hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture and even out skin tone.

You also need to moisturize your skin twice, daily. Moisturizer like RENUAdvanced® Hydrating Cream works by trapping water in your skin, which reduces the appearance of fine lines and helps your skin appear more radiant. This hydrating cream also helps support surface skin cell turnover. Make sure to apply moisturizer immediately after showering or shaving.

Presenting your best self

Whether you’re a businessman, an office worker, or working outdoors, the skin on your face is the first thing people see when they talk and interact with you. Presenting your best self pays off and first impressions are everything. The best time to start your skincare routine was yesterday, but the second best time is today. Whether your goal is to fight aging or skin issues, consistency makes a big difference. Slow down the aging clock and take care of your skin today!
